On 4 July 2026, Dr Billy Chan was honoured with a knighthood in the Order of St John of Jerusalem. As the Crusades progressed, this distinguished Order transformed from a charitable organisation into a military order, dedicated to the defence of the Holy Land while also caring for sick pilgrims.
The Order of St John of Jerusalem, known as the Knights Hospitaller, boasts a storied tradition dating back to the 11th century. Its mission focuses on serving others through charity and faith, specifically by supporting those in need and preserving its rich historic legacy. It has remained in continuous religious service for more than two centuries since its consecration in 1824 at the Anglican Church in New South Wales, Australia making it a historic building.
Dr Sir Billy Chan expressed his pride in being part of this remarkable Order in Australia. “It has a long history that traces all the way back to Europe, and the Order itself has been active in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, and other states for over six decades. I’m very proud to be involved in this brotherhood and sisterhood,” he stated. “The fantastic work they’ve done over the years is commendable, and as a medical educator, I am particularly proud of this St John tradition as it cares for the sick and the underprivileged.”
Reflecting on the investiture ceremony, Dr Sir Billy Chan noted, “I was particularly touched by the solemnity of the event held at the historic St James’ Church in Sydney. The lovely choir and church organ, alongside the wonderful acoustics, created a moving atmosphere. As I grow older, I truly appreciate the spiritual tradition and the historical significance of the idea of helping the community. This ceremony is a remarkable part of my life.”

The Priory of New South Wales upholds these values by engaging the community in various charitable activities throughout Australia, such as supporting the St Laurence House, which assists the youth and underprivileged.
Sir Patrick Tsang, Vice Chancellor for the Priory of New South Wales of the Order and a Knight Commander of the Order of the Knights of Rizal, also serves as Chairman of the New South Wales Region of the International Police Association Section Australia and as a Justice of the Peace in New South Wales. He recently extended his warmest congratulations to the new Knights and Dames honoured at an investiture ceremony held at the historic institute in Sydney.
In his remarks, Patrick reflected on the principle that charity begins at home, emphasising the vital role of charitable initiatives in supporting the local community, a long-standing cornerstone of the Order’s work.
He also expressed his pride in serving this historic Order, which originated in Europe and has maintained a presence in Australia for more than half a century.
The Order of St John of Jerusalem Knights Hospitaller – Priory of New South Wales was established under the Royal Constitution of His Majesty the late King Peter II of Yugoslavia, with His Royal Highness Prince Karl Vladimir Karadjordjević of Yugoslavia serving as Grand Master. It is also registered as a charity with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC).
