Sino Phil Asia International Brings UN Year of Peace to Manila High School for Typhoon Relief

Sino Phil Asia International Peace Foundation Founder and Chairman Dr Billy Chan and senior staff recently donated community relief to Sauyo High School in Quezon City, Metro Manila, Philippines.

In response to recent typhoon damage and in the spirit of unity to celebrate the United Nations International Year of Peace 2025 and its theme of “Act Now for a Peaceful World,” the Sino Phil Asia International Peace delegation provided 2,000 USD worth of rice, food and essential items for 170 families. This was a direct donation to the high school students and their Principal, teachers and parents.

Dr Chan’s full speech is below:

“Good morning, Principal Dr Merygee L Javier, Principal IV of Sauyo High School, to all the dedicated teachers, the wonderful staff, students, and distinguished guests — ladies and gentlemen.

It’s an absolute pleasure to be here at the MCP Hall, Sauyo High School, right here in beautiful Quezon City.

Thank you so much for inviting me to speak to our beloved learners about something truly important — peace. Your compassionate leadership and genuine care for your students, especially those facing life’s challenges, beautifully reflect the spirit of this year’s United Nations theme.

To our brilliant Congresswoman Marivic Co-Pilar of District 6, Quezon City — we’re truly honoured by your presence and grateful for your continued support of education, peace, and progress in your community.

To the respected Hon Noel Vitug, our Barangay Captain, to our hardworking Head of School, Amazing teachers and staff, and to my dear friends Rose Gonzales, the Board of Trustees and Committees of the Sino-Phil Asia International Peace Awards Foundation, and most especially, to our bright and hopeful Grade 9 learners — a very warm and peaceful morning to you all.

Today, we’ve come together in unity to celebrate the United Nations International Year of Peace 2025, with the theme: “Act Now for a Peaceful World.”

I’m genuinely delighted to be with you today. Manila feels like a second home to me, and I’ve travelled all the way from Europe — from places like Portugal, Finland, and Estonia, Hong Kong and Macau. The journey was quite the adventure What should’ve been a 24-hour flight turned into a 32 hour trek, with multiple layovers — all due to the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. It really brought home how many disruptions there are in the world right now.

As I was preparing for this trip, I thought about speaking on peace in a deep and philosophical way. But then I had a chat with my youngest son, who’s just five and a half. I asked him, “What does peace mean to you, Michael?” Of course, he’s still a bit young to grasp the full idea, so I explained that peace is about feeling safe and happy.

His answer was lovely. He said, “Daddy, peace is when you and Mummy are at home, giving me lots of hugs and telling me bedtime stories. It feels the best when you come to say goodnight and I have my beautiful dreams.”

That really touched me. It reminded me that peace starts at home — and it should stretch out to our schools, our playgrounds, our libraries, and into our everyday lives. It’s not just a big idea floating above us — it’s something we build through how we treat each other.

As someone of faith, I believe peace and forgiveness are central themes in the Bible, reflecting our Lord’s desire for harmony among His people.

One verse that speaks to this is James 1:19, which says: My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.” It’s a powerful reminder that when we disagree, it’s important to listen carefully and respond with thoughtfulness, not anger.

Another beautiful verse is Ephesians 4:32: “Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” Forgiveness is essential — and just as we’re forgiven, we’re called to offer that same grace to others.

Creating a peaceful environment means showing kindness and understanding. It’s about being there for each other — whether through small gestures or big moments. Each of you has a part to play in building peace in your communities and your school, by showing empathy and support to your friends and family.

And with that in mind, I truly believe we can create harmony in our lives and beyond. Let’s work together to build spaces where everyone feels included, valued, and safe.

Thank you for letting me share this with you today. Wishing you all a beautiful day ahead.

Thank you very much.”
