Dr Chan’s Rwanda Lion Heart

Recently, Dr Billy Chan was bestowed the Grand Cross of the Order of the Drum by His Royal Highness King Yuhi VI of Rwanda during a ceremony that emphasised the promotion of peace and charity.

Dr Chan is recognised as the first Asian Australian to receive this honour and has significantly contributed to the Royal House and founded Sino Phil Asia International Peace Awards. Moreover, the Rwandan Royal Council has announced that H.R.H. Prince Emmanuel Bushayija has been acclaimed as the successor to His Late Majesty King Kigeli V Ndahindurwa, who passed away on October 16, 2016.

Prince Emmanuel is known as His Majesty King Yuhi VI. Born on December 20, 1960, King Yuhi VI Bushayija is the son of Theoneste Bushayija and the grandson of King Yuhi V Musinga. He has spent much of his life in exile, living in Uganda and Kenya before returning to Rwanda in 1994. Since 2000, he has resided in the United Kingdom.

The legacy of the Orders, promoting peace and hope, continues to endure.

Historically, the Orders of the Drum, Crown, Crested Crane, and Lion were officially registered with the government of Vatican City in 2007. This registration serves as a form of notarization by the former President of the Pontifical Commission for Vatican City State and should not be misconstrued as Papal recognition. The registration process was presided over by His Eminence Cardinal Edmund Casimir Szoka and witnessed by Father Allen Duston on January 22, 2007.

Previously, upon ascending to the throne in 1959, His Majesty King Kigeli V registered the existence of these Orders with the Vatican through the Foreign Missions Office in Paris, France, seeking the blessing of His Holiness Pope John XXIII. It is important to note that this action was also a matter of registration rather than Papal recognition.

Dr Chan stated, “It is a true honour to receive such a prestigious award and I look forward to serving the people of Rwanda in peace and prosperity. I thank His Royal Highness King Yuhi for this extraordinary recognition and responsibility.”
