Sino Luso International Medical Forum (Series 50): Quality Assurance in Medical Education

Macao SAR___The 50th Sino Luso International Medical Forum takes place on September 7th, 2019 in tandem with the historic launch of Macao’s first Medical School.

Titled, “Quality Assurance in Medical Education” presenters from Macao, the Greater Bay Area, China, and Portugal will have a special presence as they demonstrate their expertise to senior health officials from the National Commission (formerly known as PRC Health Ministry) and Macao SAR Health Bureau (SSM), as well as the city’s frontline healthcare workers and first class of medical students. 

Presenters include Prof. Jiang Bao Guo, President of Peking University People’s Hospital, Prof. Wang Tianbing, Vice President of Peking University People’s Hospital, Dr. Zhang Yang, Director of National Health Commission (formerly known as PRC Health Ministry), Dr. Li Wei, Commissioner of National Health Commission, Prof. Xiang Tang, Director of Chinese Academy of Medical Science and Peking Union Hospital, Prof. Fausto Pinto, Dean of Faculty of Medicine at University of Lisbon, Prof. Maria Amelia Ferreira, Director of Faculty of Medicine at University of Porto, and Dr. Lei Chin Ion, Director of Macao Health Bureau, among others.

President of the Sino Luso International Medical Forum and Founding Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the Macau University of Science and Technology, Prof. Manson Fok said, “This historic conference happens as we christen our first batch of locally and organically trained medical school students in the Macao SAR. We will be welcome these young minds to attend and participate in this forum outside of their scholastic endeavors.” 

Prof. Fok added, “It is an honor to be making medical history for the people of Macao.”

Dr. Billy Chan, Vice President of the Sino Luso International Medical Forum and Director of the Office of Foreign Affairs and Center for Education in Medical Simulation at the Faculty of Medicine at the Macau University of Science and Technology, said, “Eight years ago we started this little forum with just a few presenters and a handful of spirited local doctors and nurses. Today, we have trained over 10,000 frontline healthcare providers in Macao, the Greater Bay Area, in China and in the Asia-Pacific region, especially in Cambodia and the Philippines. It is an honor to be making medical history for the people of Macao.”

Dr. Chan added, “It is the thrill and honor of my life to be dedicated to making this forum, especially now for these young and beautiful medical minds in the first class of Macao’s medical school.”

The Macau University of Science and Technology’s Faculty of Medicine Vice Dean Prof. Niv Patil said, “We are proud to see so many local students chose to study medicine here. They choose to explore deeply into medical science and the desire to pursue a noble career as medical doctors in the future.”

Prof. Patil added, “Our upcoming forum offers a fantastic opportunity for them to explore new areas before settling down to certain subject or preferences about which they are most passionate in studying medicine. We are delighted to see a list of amazing medical educationalists from world renowned medical schools world engaging in the development and delivery of clerkships for our local medical students.”

This distinguished set of lectures and symposiums will help set the blue-print for the future of Macao’s medical direction in the coming years with the finest scientific papers and ideas of quality assurance in the field, such as Immediate Past Dean of Faculty of Medicine at the University of Porto, Prof. Maria Amelia Ferreira topic of, “To Educate Physicians, to Transform Persons: Challenges in Medical Education”. The highly experienced Prof. Elizabete Loureiro from Porto, Portugal will present her latest paper titled, “Transversal Competences for Integral Education of Physicians: the Role of Clinical Communication”.

Colonel Henrique Morais who has supported the forum staunchly since its founding will also officiate.

Established in 2011, the Sino Luso International Medical Forum is Macao’s essential medical education and public healthcare non-profit training forum for the entire city’s healthcare community.
